One-Off Resident Visa

How do I get a One-Off Resident Visa?

If you have a  work visa in New Zealand or a critical purpose visitor visa you may be eligible for residence under the new 2021 Resident Visa. Some critical purpose visa holders arriving in New Zealand between 30 September 2021 and 31 July 2022 on long term visas may also be eligible for the new one-off resident visa (Immigration New Zealand).

You must also meet one of these three criteria:

  • settled criteria– have lived in New Zealand for the past three or more years
  • skilled criteria– earn at or above the median wage NZD $27 per hour
  • scarce’ criteria– work in a role on a scarce list

Holders of vital purpose visiting visas for roles of six months or longer are also eligible, as long as they arrive in New Zealand before September 29, 2018, and apply for their 2021 Resident Visa before July 31, 2022.

Applicants with  partners abroad and dependent children might include these family members in their residence application.

 Who do not qualify

  • People on Partnership Visa
  • Those who have a Specific purpose Visa
  • People on  working holiday work visas

Many doctors and GPs, as well as high-level IT professionals, work as  contractors in New Zealand and seem to have specific purpose work visas, which are not  among the qualifying work visa categories. Unfortunately, with the present policy settings, these major target groups that the Government want to retain in New Zealand have been neglected, and these visa holders will now have to wait until the SMC resumes in August 2022 to test their resident eligibility.

The application process for a One-Off Resident Visa has various advantages.

1. There is no English requirement

2. There is no age limit.

3. As everything is online, you don’t have to submit your original documents.

4. Unless INZ requests it, new overseas police certificates are not required.

5. Medical certifications from the previous three years can be trusted, and additional medical conditions can be accepted.

6. Due to the impact of Covid, employment is based on an average weekly work of 30 hours or more

7. For first-time applicants, there is a new option that allows dependent children aged 25 and up to apply.

8. The application fee for a Resident Visa is $2,160, which is lower than the fee for a Skilled Migrant Visa.
